HARLEM FIRE BLANKET

A fire blanket is a compact, fire-resistant safety device designed to extinguish small fires by smothering them and blocking the fire’s oxygen supply. It is typically made from layers of woven fiberglass or other flame-retardant materials that can withstand extremely high temperatures. Fire blankets are stored in quick-release pouches or wall-mounted containers, allowing fast and easy access during an emergency.

To use it, the blanket is pulled out by its tabs, held in front of the body for protection, and gently laid over the flames to completely cover the burning area. This starves the fire of oxygen, causing it to go out. Fire blankets are especially effective for kitchen fires, cooking-oil (pan) fires, small electrical fires, and when a person’s clothing catches fire. Because they require minimal training and create no mess, they are commonly found in homes, restaurants, laboratories, workshops, and commercial buildings.

In addition to extinguishing fires, fire blankets can offer temporary protection for individuals escaping through areas exposed to heat or small flames. They are an essential part of basic fire-safety equipment and are recommended as a complement to fire extinguishers.
